Microsoft Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of.NET based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. As pointed out by Timo Hirvonen, Netflix, which has 40 million subscribers, requires Silverlight for its paid streaming video service. The Silverlight web plugin is not installed by default but is required to view content on certain websites. Microsoft's own Silverlight plug-in does not run on Linux, but the Mono open source project has an offshoot called Moonlight, which is a Silverlight compatible plug-in that runs. On modern Macs, both Firefox and Safari are supported. Silverlight supports Mac OS10, although Silverlight version 2 or later only runs on Intel-based Macs.
